Summer is mosquito season. These blood sucking pests can cause painful itchy bumps on preemies, newborns, and toddlers. Even worse mosquitoes can carry diseases such as malaria or the Zika Virus. 

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. It is important to keep gutters, bird baths, old tires etc free of standing water. Empty and refill bird baths every 2 days.

Pants, shoes, and long sleeve shirts can minimize the exposed skin on babies. If you child does get bitten, there are several safe effective home remedies available for parents.

  • A paste made form witch hazel and baking soda not only reduces the itch but also helps prevent bacterial infection
  • White bags or Chamomile tea bags soaked in cold water and placed on bite reduces inflammation and soothes the itch 
  • Banana peel insides or onion slices rubbed on bite can help to soothe itch
